Alex Kelly

Alexander has worked with the vast majority of the UK’s Professional Orchestras, including:- London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia to name but a few.

Alexander is also in demand with Orchestras in Europe including:- Sinfonia Galicia (Spain), RTE National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), Aarhus Symphony Orchestra (Denmark), Spira Mirabilus (Italy) Alexander started his musical life as a pupil at Chetham’s School of Music on the Tenor Trombone, aged 8. Alex then took up the Bass Trombone at the age of twelve. Since then he has played in many major Youth Orchestras, including:- The National Children’s Orchestra, The National Youth Orchestra as Principal Bass Trombone for two consecutive years, the National Youth Brass Band, and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Whilst at Music College, Alexander was the Principal Bass Trombone of the European Union Youth Orchestra, a position he held for four years, and the Britten-Pears Orchestra. Alexander completed his Undergraduate Degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying with Bob Hughes (ex-Principal Bass Trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra) and with Keith McNicholl (Principal Bass Trombone of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). He then went on to complete a Masters Degree at the Royal College of Music, studying with Paul Milner (London Symphony Orchestra Bass Trombone) where he achieved a First Class Masters with Distinction.

Alexander won the BBC Young Musician Of The Year 2012 Brass Category Final and reached the competitions Semi-Final, culminating with two solo performances broadcast on BBC 2 and 4 at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and also a solo performance broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He is also winner of the John Solomon Brass Competition at the Royal Academy of Music, and was a finalist in the British Trombone Society Bob Hughes Bass Trombone Competition.

An experienced Chamber Musician, Alexander has performed at the Wigmore Hall with his Trombone Quartet, given a solo concert performance with the Royal Academy of Music Trombone Ensemble and performs regularly with his Brass Septet “Merchant City Brass”, made up of players from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Alexander is in demand as a Session player, having recorded the soundtracks to many Hollywood films and classical CD recordings including:- Mission Impossible Fallout, Snowden, The Commuter, Elgar Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra Sir Simon Rattle and Sheku Kanneh-Mason and numerous BBC television program soundtracks. Alexander also recorded an award winning CD with the Sid Lawrence Orchestra (Big Band) and Clare Teal.

Alexander also deputises in West End shows such as:- Phantom of the Opera, 42nd Street, Chess, and Carousel.
